Slack.com Muting a channel

Muting a channel allows you to occasionally browse its activity without being notified of unread messages.

A muted channel will never appear as unread (bold) in the channel list. You will no longer receive notifications for any activity in the channel, including @mentions. When you are mentioned in a muted channel, you will see a mention count indicator next to its name in the channel list.

To mute a channel:

To quickly mute or unmute a channel, just type /mute into the message box and hit Enter. Here’s where to find the setting in Slack:

  1. On your desktop, open the channel you’d like to mute.
  2. Click the channel name at the top of the page.
  3. Select Notification preferences.
  4. In the Notification Preferences menu, check the Mute this channel box.
  5. Click Done.

To unmute, revisit the Notification Preferences menu and uncheck the Mute box.
